How to Keep Gums Healthy

How to Keep Gums Healthy

We often think of teeth when we think of maintaining good oral hygiene and a winning smile. But what we most often overlook is the unsung hero: The Gums. Gums help keep teeth secure, and form a tight seal around the roots of teeth to prevent bacteria from harming the roots of teeth. Keeping gums healthy is an important part of having healthy teeth, and a winning smile. If you’re wondering how to keep gums healthy, it’s as simple as good oral hygiene.

Good Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is an important part of learning to keep gums healthy. Brushing and flossing can help resolve or prevent early gingivitis, the beginning stage of gum disease. Diligence is key to good oral hygiene, brushing and flossing twice a day being a good rule. But also important are using a soft bristled brush that will not irritate gums, and an American Dental Association approved toothpaste that contains fluoride. You can further bolster your oral hygiene routine by talking to your dentist about other needs you may have, and how to best meet them.

Excellent Diet

A healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, dairy such as yogurt, milk, and cheese, can support good oral health, including gum health. These foods can reduce plaque build up, and may even prevent plaque build up. Eating healthy foods is generally an all around good choice for your body, your oral health being just one more area of your life that is benefited. This is especially good for keeping gums healthy, as plaque build up can cause inflammation in the gums, one symptom of periodontal disease. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, apples, celery, can actually help remove plaque as you chew, contributing to your oral health as much as your overall health. Dairy items, such as milk and yogurt contain vitamins and minerals that contribute to bone and tooth health.
